Windshield Wiper Maintenance

Windshield wipers are a vital part of our driving experience. You might not need them everyday, but when you really need them, a sputtering, streaking or squeaky wiper is just not going to cut it. It is important to change your windshield wiper blades at least once a year, especially if you live in a climate that sees any combination of rainy or snowy weather. If you make an effort to do some general maintenance on your windshield wipers, the results will make a massive difference in your overall driving experience. Below you will find some general maintenance tips to extend the life of your windshield wiper blades.

If you live in an area that frequently sees inclement weather in the form of snow or freezing rain, make sure that you pull the wiper blades up and away from the windshield. This will prevent buildup from forming on the mechanism, as well as preventing the wiper from becoming stuck on the windshield, which can cause issues to the rubber and alter the effectiveness. Make sure you never utilize your windshield wipers to clean snow or ice off your windshield. This can not only effect the squeegee portion of the device, but also brake the motor which could cost you big bucks to fix or replace. Instead, let your car run and heat up for a moment and use an ice scrape to push the ice and snow away.

Get into the habit of cleaning your windshield whenever you fill up your gas tank. The squeegee is right there at your disposal, waiting to be used, so just do it. It only takes a minute, yet it will make a huge difference in the effectiveness of the windshield wipers and visibility on your daily commutes. However, check the squeegee before you begin cleaning; you ever know if the person before you was coming back from an off-road adventure, leaving dirt and small rocks embedded in the tool. The last thing you want are nicks and scratches to your windshield.

It is important to remember, however, that even incredibly well performed maintenance is not going to lead to everlasting life for your windshield wipers. If you practice the above tips and still find that your wipers are not performing adequately, take the opportunity to replace them as soon as possible. With new wipers, your view will be clearer than ever, which will make your driving experience both more enjoyable and safer.
