Honda, the Japanese auto giant, came to India in the year 1996 and has been a strong presence in the Indian car market ever since. The automaker set up its factory in Greater Noida (in Uttar Pradesh) and started offering premium cars to the Indian car buyers. That the company had a successful stint in India is clear from the fact that Honda has recently opened another manufacturing unit at Tapukara (in Rajasthan).
Honda cars have been top sellers, especially in the sedan segment. Honda City is one car that has seen unprecedented success and customer backing. This is a premium sedan and it has redefined the way that the Indian customers looked at the sedans. As a result, the car has been very popular and enjoyed customer confidence to the fullest.
Honda had offered only a petrol variant of the City until recently. This had started affecting the sales of the car, as more and more car buyers preferred a diesel car. Honda was quick to rectify the problem and introduced a diesel variant of the City, which saw the iconic car back on the top of the segment. It became hugely popular and it helped Honda reclaim its number one slot in the sedan segment.
Another top-selling car from Honda is the compact Sedan, Amaze. This was the first diesel car to be introduced in India. Honda Amaze proved to be an instant hit and it was the success of this car, which prompted Honda to go for a diesel version of the city.
Apart from these two top performers, Honda also offer a compact car Brio in India. This car has managed to do reasonably well, despite the tough competition from the rivals. However, the Brio has not been able to repeat the grand success of the City and the Amaze.
Honda CR-V is the sole SUV from the carmaker. It is a premium SUV, which has done well in the Indian market. However, the influx of many SUVs from the rivals has affected the overall performance of this car. In addition to the competition, the premium pricing of the car is also been quoted as one of the reasons for it not doing very well in the country.
In short, it can be safely summarized that when it comes to sedan, Honda is the top performer in India.
