Since Mini’s phenomenal relaunch in 2001, we’ve seen countless new models hit the market. In fact, the Mini range is one of the most bloated motor ranges on the market. Not that that’s a bad thing. Mini have brought us some of the most exciting small cars on the planet. Not least the Mini Cooper S and the long-awaited five-door Mini last year. At the end of 2014, the company took a long, hard look at the range and decided to slim it down. They cut the unnecessary models, and made the others better. In the last month, they’ve announced new designs for 2016. It’s safe to say that the future looks bright for Mini.
The cream of the crop has always been the John Cooper Works (JCW). It’s the fastest, most exciting Mini on the road, and it just got a rework. We were lucky enough to get our hands on the new model for a weekend. We were sceptical about yet another new Mini, but we’ll gladly eat our proverbial hat. It was astonishing. The new JCW will hit the market in the next few months, so keep your eyes peeled on www.coopermini.co.uk. Without further ado, let’s take a deeper look, shall we?
The JCW Mini Cooper is surrounded on all sides by fantastic competitors. The hot hatchback market is one of the most fiercely fought arenas. The car to beat is the Ford Fiesta ST, while the Golf GTi also poses a strong threat. On paper, the JCW Mini outperforms both of them, but that comes at a cost. The JCW is expensive, but is it worth the extra cost?
First of all, let’s take a look at the engine. After all, it is the JCW’s calling card. This Mini is built for speed, power, and aggression. We couldn’t wait to unleash it and see what it could do. The stats speak for themselves (0-60 in 6.1 seconds, 208bhp), so we were expecting something special. Incredibly, the car felt even faster than it should have done! Why? It’s all about the handling.
The wonderful thing about the handling of a Mini is that it gives you confidence. Driving a Mini makes you feel like a racing driver. You know that you can trust it in the corners. You can throw it around a track with confidence. It lets you push it faster and drive harder. The JCW grips the corners like nothing else in its class. It feels light and responsive.
The new JCW comes with a vast array of technology. Unfortunately, you do have to pay for it. Mini offer just about everything you could ask for, but it comes under the optional extras package. If your pockets are big enough, however, you can take advantage of heads up displays. You can also add the iPhone connection and BMW’s highly-rated iDrive function.
All in all, the new Mini Cooper JCW is a triumph. It’s not the best looking Mini on the market, but when you’re sat behind the wheel, you certainly won’t care about that. The beauty of this car is under the bonnet. It’s fast, exciting, and bursting with passion. We love it.
